The Insurance Institute of Uganda (IIU) upheld the efforts of the late John Ssebaana Kizito, a distinguished insurer and economist.

 Insurance Institute of Uganda conducts 2nd Ssebaana Kizito Memorial Lecture.

Themed on ‘The Emerging Challenges and Trends in the Insurance Sector, the event converged different insurance players to reminisce the grandfather of insurance professionalism in Uganda.

While giving his opening remarks at the lecture, Saul Sseremba, the Chief Executive Officer of the institute described the late Ssebaana as a selfless, unblemished leader who put the interests of his people and country above his own.

“Ssebaana’s passion for capacity building, professionalism and working together as an industry was unrivalled,” said Sseremba,

“He mentored various people who have turned out to be the captains of the industry”.

Ssebaana is remembered for his great contribution to the insurance industry key among which include being a co-founding partner of the first truly Ugandan Insurance Company- Statewide Insurance Company, a founding member of Uganda Insurers Association and Chairman of the National Insurance Corporation.

Sseremba urged insurance industry players to use the lecture as an opportunity to reflect on the volatility and challenges faced by insurers and come up with creative and innovative ways of steering the insurance sector forward.

The guest of honour and Katikkiro of Buganda, Owek Charles Peter Mayiga applauded the institute for recognizing the efforts of a great statesman who positively made a mark on the economic and political landscape of Uganda.

“It takes courage of great people like John Ssebaana Kizito to establish a private insurance company in a not so friendly environment and sustain  it for a long period of time,” said Mayiga, also adding,

“We should therefore use this platform to work on changing perception of the insurance industry in Uganda through putting in place easier claims settlement mechanisms that will not only restore trust in the insurance industry but also increase penetration”.

In her Key Note Address, Ms Patty K Martin, the Chairperson of Organization of Eastern and Southern Africa Insurers (OESAI) and CEO of Namibia Reinsurance Corporation Limited emphasized the role of technology in increasing insurance uptake in Uganda.

“Technology is among the new trends driving the insurance industry not only as an enabler but also helps to improve access,” said Patty. She was joined by other panelists including IRA CEO, Alhaji Kaddunabbi Ibrahim Lubega,           Josephine Mutabuuza – Principal Officer Barclays Bank and IK John Byaruhanga – Commissioner Financial Services MoFPED.

This was the second memorial lecture for the late Hon John Ssebaana Kizito organized by The Insurance Institute of Uganda, the institution charged with enhancing professionalism in Uganda’s Insurance industry. The event also

The institute organized the inaugural lecture on August 15th 2018 at Hotel Africana. The focus of the first lecture was to dialogue on how the industry- and financial services in general- can adapt and continue to grow amidst a rapidly changing global environment extending to how we can interact with technology, product development and innovation, government policy and marketing- all to the advantage of our clients- among others.

The event was sponsored by the Insurance Institute of Uganda, Statewide Insurance Company, the Uganda Insurers Association, the Insurance Brokers Association of Uganda, Uganda Re and COSEKE.
