GENERAL OBJECTIVES

The course is intended to produce graduates who are technically and practically competent to start a career in the insurance industry in Uganda.

The specific objectives are as follows:

  • To equip students with basic foundation knowledge of insurance in order to develop a better understanding of insurance practice.
  • To apply the technical and practical skills needed in starting a career in the insurance industry.
  • To acquire knowledge to improve the selling, underwriting, investigating or assessing losses of insurance products to the public. 
  • To appreciate the importance of business ethics with special reference to insurance.

   

 LEARNING OUTCOMES

 Upon completion of this programme, the Learner should be able to;

  1. Apply the basic insurance knowledge and skills to his/her workplace.
  2. Operate as lower-level officers with insurance firms or run an insurance agency.
  3. Acquire technical and practical skills needed in building careers in the insurance industry.
  4. Acquire knowledge selling, investigating and underwriting insurance business functions in the workplace.
  5. Gain the necessary business ethics with special reference to the insurance industry.

 Target

The Certificate in Insurance is appropriate for:

  • Anyone wishing to gain a broad understanding of insurance principles, key disciplines and products.
  • Employees who have no formal insurance qualifications but wish to objectively demonstrate insurance knowledge and understanding.
  • Anyone working in specific technical claims handling or underwriting roles within a call or service Centre environment
  • Insurance staff employed in support functions such as human resources, marketing, IT and finance wishing to develop an understanding of the industry in which they work.
  • Staff working for an organization whose primary business is not insurance, but which offers insurance advice and products as part of its overall service to customers.

 

REGULATIONS

Selection of the Courses

 Certificate in Insurance 

A total of thirteen papers are offered and a student will qualify for the Certificate in Insurance by sitting and being examined in five-course units. To be awarded a Certificate in Insurance, one must have completed five-course units as follows;

 

  • One (1) Compulsory (mandatory) course unit,
  • Two (2) Core Insurance course units
  • Two (2) Complementary course units.

 

Students who will have covered some of the papers under the COP will be exempted of the Compulsory (mandatory) course unit and the Core insurance course unit which he/she will have covered.
